Biography

Biography

Hello everyone, thanks for visiting my website!

As a former school teacher, I’m excited to be at the beginning of my journey as a published author.

I grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, and bringing home library books was a weekly event. Like many of my writer friends, I was often caught reading late into the night after my parents had called lights out! Lots of reading led to lots of writing because I love making up stories. My mum told me way back then that I should be a writer, however, I believe timing is everything and sometimes, you just have to wait for the stars to align.

As a high school student, I was conflicted about what career path to pursue. I’d been playing musical instruments since primary school and my high school music teachers were encouraging me to study a Bachelor of Music. My English teacher, however, wanted me to study English Literature. In the end, I was accepted into two degrees, Music and the Arts. Horror of horrors! Timetable clashes between the two degrees created quite the scheduling mess, so Music became my major focus with English Literature squeezed in on the side.

After completing my post grad teaching qualifications, I won a music teaching position at Clare High School. Therein began a 40-year love affair as an educator, however, writing and storytelling was always lurking in the background!

At the end of 2020, I left full time teaching after 20 years as Head of Music at Woodville High School's Special Interest Music Program. This was a huge decision, but one I don't regret. I desperately needed time to concentrate on, and fully commit to, writing as a career.

I hope you enjoy scrolling through my website. I’m proud of my debut crime novel Beneath Her Lies and hope you’ll find time to read some of the reviews and follow the purchase links if you would like a copy.

Since its launch in late July 2025, it’s been a wild ride with many welcome and unexpected author invitations. If you enjoy reading my work stay tuned, there’s plenty more to come!

Author Talks & Writing Workshops

Hi Leanda

Thank you for your author presentation to some of our Year 7 and 8 students during Book Week. Students were on the edge of their seats as you read the prologue from your recently published first novel. They participated enthusiastically in a well-planned writing workshop to develop their sensory writing skills. This was a wonderful opportunity for them to engage in authentic deep learning. The buzz afterwards, particularly from the Year 7 students, was great to hear! Looking forward to your return visit working with the EALD students in term 4.

Belinda Parker – English / EALD & Languages Coordinator, Woodville High School

Hi Leanda,

Thank you for visiting and running interactive writing workshops for our Year 5 classes concentrating on character, setting, and dialogue. At the time, we were in the thick of our novel study on 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe', with a focus on fantasy and creative writing. Your workshops provided the students with clear examples and engaging tasks. Students were able to clearly identify and choose their own 'port key', much like the wardrobe, and incorporate this, as well as character traits and dialogue, into their set writing task. The students also loved the prospect of hearing about your upcoming middle-grade novel well before its release. Thank you once again for your hard work and time.
